You know how Instagram recommends new accounts for you to follow? Well, sometimes they actually hit the nail on the head.
Once I came across Hydro Kitty, I immediately I reached out to see if Alyssa had any product recommendations she could share with me that might help soothe my dry winter skin. She came through in a big way! Alyssa’s recs were not only on point, but she also took the time to talk to me about some of her favorite brands (like Code of Harmony and Undefined Beauty).
Alyssa first started experimenting with making her own CBD-infused products, but once she discovered several companies already creating great products, she knew she could help make their brands easier for shoppers to find. Alyssa’s background as a User Experience Designer helped her to build out Hydro Kitty as a solo-repreneur at first. (She’s done graphics and UI design for fashion brands like HauteLook and Shoedazzle!)
The CBD products that Alyssa sources for Hydro Kitty, the online retail shop she started in 2017, are both organic and cruelty-free. Since starting, she’s discovered how many female-founded brands are leading the way when it comes to CBD-infused product lines. Like me, she’s big on supporting women-owned businesses, so you’ll find brand bios and founder pics on her website when you’re shopping. I really love getting these kinds of behind the scenes snippets about a brand because it helps me to relate to them on an entirely different level.
The biggest hurdle that Alyssa, and several other brands in the cannabis space, continues to face is unreliable payment processing. Banks are still iffy when it comes to CBD merchants. In her first year of business, on top of typical new business struggles, she had to deal with payment processors shutting down service without any warning whatsoever. If you’ve been buying or following the CBD market for a while, you’ve probably seen several brands have “hiccups” like these. It’s an unfortunate truth of the business in its current state and we’re all hoping that it will improve sooner rather than later.

WHY DO YOU THINK IT IS IMPORTANT TO BE A WOMAN-OWNED BUSINESS?
To show other women and young girls that they do have a place at the table. Young girls need to see more of themselves represented in every industry, and at every level within it.
DO YOU FEEL LIKE BEING A WOMAN HAS HELPED OR HINDERED YOUR BUSINESS IN ANY WAY?
It's done both, for sure. Being a woman helps me connect with a solid community of other women in the beauty industry. We've helped each-other grow our businesses with independent ferocity. However, that same independence makes me timid about things like raising capitol. Women tend to shy away from asking for help and are less likely to receive funding, especially with most investment firms being primarily comprised of men.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PRODUCT FROM YOUR shop AND HOW DO YOU like to USE IT?
My favorite product is Khus Khus' Sen Face Serum. I use it everyday, and I know it's got a high price tag at $78 a bottle, but it lasts a long time and it feels amazing.
WHAT ARE YOUR RECOMMENDED RESOURCES FOR LEARNING ABOUT CANNABIS/CBD?
I recommend just getting out there and going to wellness events.
